‘The Holiday’ Is the Latest Iconic 2000s IP to Get a Revival — This Time for Apple TV+

It must be those Santa Ana winds…

Just as early 2000s films “Freaky Friday,” “The Devil Wears Prada,” “Bend It Like Beckham,” and “The Princess Diaries” are receiving franchise sequels, Nancy Meyers’ beloved “The Holiday” is getting the TV treatment.

Yes, the 2006 film “The Holiday” is being reimagined by “Catastrophe” co-creator Rob Delaney and “Sweetpea” writer/co-executive producer Krissie Ducker for Apple TV+. The duo previously worked together on “Catastrophe,” as Ducker was a writers’ assistant on the series.

Deadline first reported the project, and cited that “The Holiday” writer/director/producer Meyers “has no involvement” in the revival limited series. The show will also center on different characters than the film did, with a casting search underway.

“The Holiday” originally centered on Los Angeles-based movie marketing executive Amanda (Cameron Diaz), who swaps homes with Iris (Kate Winslet), a London newspaper columnist. Both women ease their heartbreak with new men on opposite sides of the world: Amanda finds love with Iris’ brother (Jude Law) while Iris connects with a film composer (Jack Black). The film takes place in December, making it a de facto Christmas movie. As Deadline cited, the series will “reboot the premise of the film with new characters.”

“The Holiday” was rumored for a sequel in 2022. The Sun falsely reported from an unnamed source that production would be starting in early 2023 with the original cast. However, Meyers shut down the claim at the time. “So many DM’s about this,” Meyers captioned on Instagram. “Sorry but it’s not true.”

Actress Winslet’s representative further confirmed to IndieWire that no plans for a “The Holiday” sequel were in the works at the time. Winslet told People magazine of the rumored film, “I read something about that, but it’s the first I’ve heard of it. I promise you, not an agent or a representative or anyone from the first one around has had any conversation with me about that. Hand on heart, that’s never come up.”

Her co-star Law later shared how “The Holiday” is one of his most enduring films. “They asked the audience who has seen ‘The Holiday’ or who watches it every year,” Law said during a career tribute at the 2024 Mill Valley Film Festival. “Ninety percent of the audience put their hand up. It’s a delightful thing what this movie has become.”
