Jon Hamm doesn’t want to take on any “boring” roles; in fact, he prefers to play the morally corrupt characters rather than a “Superman” type, despite having the Clark Kent look. The “Your Friends and Neighbors” actor told W that he has narrowed his preferences for his career.
“My history of characters isn’t exactly the saints; it’s more on the sinner side of the equation,” the “Fargo” and “Mad Men” star said. “But Superman can be kind of boring. No offense to the new Superman [David Corenswet], who I hope is a delightful person.”
And while some stars do find Superman to be more complex (Jacob Elordi previously told GQ that he turned down reading for a Superman role for an unnamed project as it was “too dark“), Hamm is steering clear of playing a superhero of any kind. He told The Hollywood Reporter that his “Mad Men” character Don Draper was “celebrated for the wrong reasons” and was in fact more of a villain than a victim.

“Jimmy Gandolfini, whom I knew a little bit, had a similar relationship to Tony Soprano, and Bryan Cranston had it with Walter White [for ‘Breaking Bad’]. The character got celebrated for the wrong reasons,” Hamm said amid the 10-year anniversary of the “Mad Men” series finale. “People thought that Don was this paragon of masculinity or whatever. There were so many think-pieces, and you go, ‘Wait, he was pretty fucked up.’ And I was very happy with how Matt [Weiner] ended the story, but it was also hard.”
Hamm did tease, however, in 2023 that he would be open to being part of the MCU, just perhaps in a more nuanced role. “I’ve been a fan of Marvel Comics and comics in general since I was probably single digits. I think there are tons of stories that I’m familiar with, at least, that are still out there to be told,” he said. “Hopefully, whatever their plans are, they include me. But if not, I know that they have a pretty deep bench of folks that are ready to be a part of those stories. There are certainly a lot of stories in the ‘X-Men’ world to be told. ‘Fantastic’ Four as well, Doctor Doom. There are so many great things out there. But yeah, I hope I get a chance. Who knows?”
