A New Teaser for Osgood Perkins’ ‘Keeper’ Asks Why Things Have to End

The ongoing partnership between Osgood Perkins and Neon continues to be one of the healthiest marriages in all of independent film. But the horror auteur is preparing to follow the success of “Longlegs” and “The Monkey” with a dark look into relationships gone awry.

Perkins’ latest work — and his third Neon release in 16 months — “Keeper” sees him applying his distinctly dark gaze to a contained horror film about a woman who finds herself trapped in a haunted cabin. A new teaser released on Monday gives fans their closest look yet into the secrets it might be hiding.

An official synopsis for the film reads “During an anniversary getaway at a remote cabin, a wife (Tatiana Maslany) is left alone after her husband (Rossif Sutherland) departs, only to confront a sinister presence that exposes the cabin’s chilling past.”

Perkins’ meteoric rise through the indie horror world began with the 2024 thriller “Longlegs,” which parlayed a viral marketing campaign in which Nicholas Cage’s serial killer look was kept hidden into one of the year’s biggest horror openings. The film’s success prompted Perkins to sign a first-look deal with Neon, saying in a statement at the time: “Ever hear the one about the filmmaker who madly loves his distributor? No? That’s because I think this might be the very first time it’s happened in our business where even brief phone calls can be rough. Meanwhile here I am with Neon, like: you hang up first, no you hang up first! I couldn’t be happier.”

The director previously told IndieWire that “Keeper” offers a more “zoomed out” perspective on human relations than his previous films, describing the project as a “grown-up, kind of relationship horror.” He also noted that due to the writers’ strike taking place during production, he was unable to have a hand in the script.

“It was made during the [Writers Guild] strike, so I couldn’t write it, this lovely Canadian non-union guy (Nick Lepard) wrote this movie and we sort of figured out this thing,” Perkins said. “I was able to get Tatiana Maslany and Rossif Sutherland to kind of do a grown-up, kind of relationship horror that takes place in, more or less, one location. It’s a beautiful, beautiful movie.

Neon will release “Keeper” in theaters on Friday, November 14. Watch the new teaser below.
