‘Bone Lake’ Trailer: An Erotic Vacation Turns Bloody in Fantastic Fest Horror Breakout

The horror movie “Bone Lake” explores what is many people’s worst nightmare: finding out your Airbnb has been double booked.

In the first trailer for “Bone Lake,” the horror film directed by Mercedes Bryce Morgan, it’s immediately clear that yes, the title has two meanings: there’s gonna be a lot of boning going on at this picturesque, secluded lake, and also there’s going to be a lot of bones at the bottom of said lake. But the drama starts when a couple on a romantic vacation discover another attractive and young couple has also booked the home for the weekend. And things get creepy and bloody from there after some foreplay.

Here’s the official synopsis: A couple’s romantic vacation at a secluded lakeside estate is upended when they are forced to share the mansion with a mysterious and attractive couple. In this darkly hilarious and seductive horror story, a dream getaway spirals into a nightmarish maze of sex, lies, and manipulation, bringing terrifying secrets to light and triggering a bloody battle for survival.

Audiences who saw “Bone Lake” out of Fantastic Fest in 2024 upon its premiere responded to its sex appeal, its dark humor, as well as its scares. It currently has a 95 percent on Rotten Tomatoes from 20 reviews. Bleecker Street then jumped on it out of the festival for U.S. distribution and partnered with LD Entertainment, setting a release date for October 3. That’s a crowded release date that also includes the return of Daniel Day-Lewis in “Anemone” from Focus Features and Josh Safdie’s “The Smashing Machine” from A24. But curiously, it also opens the same day as another breakout horror movie generating a lot of buzz, IFC Films’ “Good Boy” that’s a horror movie told entirely from the perspective of a dog. Bone Lake gives an entirely different connotation to a dog of course.

Marco Pigossi, Maddie Hasson, Alex Roe, and Andra Nechita are your sexy slasher victims starring in “Bone Lake.” Bryce Morgan directed from a screenplay by Joshua Friedlander, and this is her third feature after directing 2022’s “Fixation” and “Spoonful of Sugar.”
