“The Batman” won’t be back in Gotham anytime soon. Three years after a sequel was announced in 2022, DC head James Gunn has shared that a script is still not yet complete. Matt Reeves is writing the sequel and is set to direct, with Robert Pattinson reprising the title role.
Gunn told Entertainment Weekly that Reeves is still at work on the script, and “The Batman 2” remains a “really important” installment in the burgeoning DC universe. Gunn’s “Superman” is also rumored to have a reference to the Caped Crusader.
“What Matt’s doing is still really important, despite all stories to the contrary,” Gunn said. “We’re supposed to see that script [for ‘The Batman 2’] shortly, and I can’t wait.”
Warner Bros. previously delayed “The Batman 2” release from October 2, 2026 to October 1, 2027. Another delay might happen if the script has not yet been finalized as of June 2025.
Gunn said in 2024 that the delay between the two “Batman” films was to be expected. “To be fair, a 5 year gap or more is fairly common in sequels,” Gunn wrote on Threads at the time. “7 years between ‘Alien’ and ‘Aliens.’ 14 years between ‘Incredibles.’ 7 years between the first two ‘Terminators.’ 13 years between ‘Avatars.’ 36 years between ‘Top Guns.’ And, of course, 6 years between ‘Guardians Vol 2’ and ‘Vol 3.’”
He also earlier posted on Threads to confirm the delay of “The Batman 2,” writing that “the only reason the film was pushed” was because a “full script” wasn’t done yet. “Matt [Reeves] is committed to making the best film he possibly can, and no one can accurately guess exactly how long a script will take to write,” Gunn wrote. “Once there is a finished script, there is around two years for pre-production, shooting and post-production on big films.”
Reeves previously described “The Batman” as only the beginning to a multi-layered franchise, telling Entertainment Weekly in 2022 that he wants to “create a Batverse” surrounding Pattinson’s Dark Knight. “You don’t do a story and go, ‘This is Chapter 1’ because you might not get to do Chapter 2. So, the story had to stand on its own,” Reeves said of the film. “But the thing about it is that the Bat world is so rich with character that as you’re starting to come to an end, you can already start thinking about the next thing. Because the idea, of course, is that Gotham’s story never ends.”
