Since its founding in 1999, the Newport Beach Film Festival in Orange County, California has grown into one of Southern California’s largest international cinema events thanks to its wide range of programming and appearances by actors ranging from Harvey Keitel and Nicolas Cage to June Squibb and Colman Domingo. This year, the festival is launching a new event that looks to do for television what the film fest has done for the movies.
Set for the first weekend in June, the inaugural Newport Beach TV Fest will feature screenings and panels related to some of television’s most acclaimed and popular shows, including “The White Lotus,” “Yellowjackets,” “1923,” and “The Studio.” This morning the festival announced that it will present its Outstanding Drama Series Award to Taylor Sheridan’s Paramount+ series “Landman” at an event that will be attended by several of the show’s stars.
Billy Bob Thornton (“Tommy Norris”), Andy Garcia (“Galino”), Ali Larter (“Angela Norris”), and Jacob Lofland (“Cooper Norris”) will accept the award following a panel discussion on Saturday, June 7 at 6pm. “The Newport Beach TV Fest is thrilled to celebrate ‘Landman’ with the Outstanding Drama Series Award,” said Gregg Schwenk, CEO and Executive Director of the Newport Beach TV Fest. “Within Taylor Sheridan’s body of work, this series captures the raw ambition and complex dynamics of Americana with unparalleled intensity. We’re excited to honor the show at our inaugural festival.”
“Landman” has become one of the most streamed shows on television since its debut last November, racking up tens of billions of minutes viewed according to Nielsen. Set in the oil boomtowns of West Texas, ‘Landman’ uses Thornton’s character, crisis manager Tommy Norris, as the anchor for an upstairs/downstairs story of roughnecks and wildcat billionaires fueling an industry that shapes the world’s climate, economy, and politics. Season 2 is scheduled to premiere this November.
The Newport Beach TV Fest runs from June 5 to June 8. Tickets for events and screenings will be available at nbtvfest.com.
