The Colleen Hoover cinematic universe is expanding one twisted tragedy at a time. “Regretting You,” based on Hoover’s 2019 novel, stars Allison Williams and Dave Franco as people whose family is torn apart after an accident.
The official synopsis reads: “A shocking car wreck takes the lives of two family members, unlocking a series of secrets, lies, and regrets. The people left behind can’t move forward without looking at the past. ‘Regretting You’ explores what’s left behind after a tragedy, the messiness and grief, but also the beauty of life and love.” Mckenna Grace, Scott Eastwood, Mason Thames, Sam Morelos, Ethan Samuel Costanilla, Willa Fitzgerald, and Clancy Brown co-star.
The first Hoover adaptation was “It Ends With Us,” starring Blake Lively, Brandon Sklenar, and Justin Baldoni, who also directed. The film was released in August 2024. In addition to “Regretting You,” other Hoover adaptations include Michael Showalter’s “Verity” with Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson, which Amazon/MGM Studios premiered a teaser of during its CinemaCon presentation, and “Reminders of Him” starring Maika Monroe. Hoover co-wrote the screenplay for “Reminders of Him” based on her own 2022 novel.
“Regretting You” stars Williams and Franco both had buzzy years in the horror genre space, with Williams returning for “MEGAN 2.0” and Franco leading the acclaimed “Together.” The film is directed by Josh Boone (“The Fault in Our Stars”), from a script Boone wrote based on a previous draft by Susan McMartin. “Regretting You” is executive produced by Hoover, Williams, Franco, and Grace. Oliver Berben, Jon D. Wagner, Emily Magee, Pete Chiappetta, Anthony Tittanegro, Andrew Lary, Michael Rothstein, Samuel Hall, and Warren Goz also executive produce. Brunson Green, Anna Todd, Flavia Viotti, and Robert Kulzer produce.
