Russell Crowe has joined the cast of “Highlander,” the reboot of the ’80s action film that will star Henry Cavill and is being directed by “John Wick” filmmaker Chad Stahelski, an individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire.
“Highlander” has been in the works for some time, but it recently moved from Lionsgate to Amazon MGM Studios, which is now planning to release it theatrically. Former Netflix film chief Scott Stuber is producing the film for Amazon MGM’s newly launched United Artists banner. UA now has the full rights to the project and franchise and hopes to turn it into a new series of films.
The original “Highlander” from 1986 starred Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery and followed the climax of an ancient battle between immortal warriors, one unfolding through interwoven past and present-day storylines. It’s a cult classic that has spawned multiple sequels and a TV series. Michael Finch, who wrote “John Wick: Chapter 4,” is penning the remake.

Crowe, who won Best Actor at the Oscars for “Gladiator,” will next be seen in “Nuremberg” for director James Vanderbilt, which Sony Pictures Classics just acquired for release. He also recently wrapped the thriller “Unabom” for Netflix, a Cold War thriller called “Billion Dollar Spy,” and an action thriller “Bear Country.”
