‘Task’ Trailer: Brad Ingelsby’s ‘Mare of Easttown’ Follow-Up Is Another Rough-Hewn Slice of Americana

Mare of Easttown” creator Brad Ingelsby is back exploring another distinctive slice of Americana with “Task,” an HBO original drama series debuting Sunday September 7 and releasing its seven-episode season weekly after that. Take a look at the newly released trailer for “Task” below.

Ingelsby became one of TV’s most celebrated new creators with his 2021 limited series “Mare of Easttown,” starring Kate Winslet — IndieWire even listed “Mare of Easttown” as one of the greatest HBO series ever. A portrait of a near-suburban eastern Pennsylvania police chief, it gripped viewers with its twisty but empathetic procedural story as Winslet’s cop unravels a murder mystery. It felt like one of the few cops-and-criminals crime thrillers that actually cared about its victims.

It’s taken four years, but Ingelsby returns with a new series, and “Task” looks to explore other often-neglected aspects of American life. This time, Mark Ruffalo leads an FBI Task Force assigned to solving a string of armed robberies, led by a family man (Tom Pelphrey) who hardly fits the profile of career criminal.

Ingelsby’s always been interested in life at the margins. His debut spec script, which became the 2013 film “Out of the Furnace,” came to him when he imagined what it would be like to be a criminal recently let out of prison — at the time he was writing it, the then AFI grad student was working a summer job at the famed Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio.

His work is that of deeply felt character studies, from the Sienna Miller-starring “American Woman” to the addiction recovery drama “The Way Back.” Ingelsby’s most recent film is the Julianne Moore-Sydney Sweeney starring thriller “Echo Valley.”

Billed right now as a drama series, it’ll be interesting to see if “Task” has multi-season potential for HBO. “Mare of Easttown” won multiple Emmys in the limited series categories for the 2020-2021 season, though it lost Best Limited Series to “The Queen’s Gambit.” IndieWire is certainly excited about this one. We put “Task” on our list of our most anticipated HBO shows of 2025. Watch the trailer below.
