You Can Now Debate ‘Megalopolis’ (and America’s Future) with Francis Ford Coppola

Francis Ford Coppola is set to travel the country with his latest filmMegalopolis” to facilitate discussions about the future of America.

“Megalopolis” stars Adam Driver as architect Cesar Catilina, who strives to create a utopian city while battling Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito). Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, and Aubrey Plaza co-star in the Cannes feature that Coppola self-funded for $120 million. It will soon be turned into a graphic novel with an October 2025 release.

Coppola’s tour with Live Nation is titled “An Evening With Francis Ford Coppola and ‘Megalopolis,’” with the director going to six different cities to screen the film. After the feature, Coppola will participate in an interactive discussion with the audience about the theme of “How to Change Our Future.” Tickets are on sale now via Ticketmaster.

Coppola has long been politically active and especially outspoken against President Trump. During a livestream event with Robert De Niro and Spike Lee in 2024, Coppola explained how “Megalopolis” is a metaphor for the fall of Rome, which is also akin to how America is today, according to the filmmaker.

“People always said, ‘Why do you want to make a movie about America as Rome?,’” Coppola said. “Um, today America is Rome. And we’re about to go through the same experience, for the same reasons, that Rome lost its republic and ended up with an emperor. This movie is perhaps very prescient to do, a movie about America, because it’s going to happen in a few months.” (This was prior to the 2024 election.)

He continued, “Rome was so prosperous, Rome was making lots of money. So the senators were actually very interested in their power and their own wealth. And they weren’t managing the country. Well, the same thing has happened here. Our Senate and representatives are all manipulating their own power rather than running the country. And we’re in danger of losing it.”

“Megalopolis” has not yet been made available on any streaming platforms. The tour will be the first time the film is brought back to the public. “This is the way ‘Megalopolis’ was meant to be seen, in a large venue, with a crowd and followed by intense interactive discussions about the future,” Coppola said in a statement from THR.
