A24’s loss is Bleecker Street‘s gain. “Victorian Psycho,” the new film from “Sanctuary” director Zachary Wigon and starring Maika Monroe, has landed at Bleecker Street after the psychological horror movie was originally meant to be released by A24, as IndieWire reported back in December.
While it’s unclear at present why A24 exited the film, a source tells IndieWire Bleecker Street loved the script when it first hit the market and more recently saw an opportunity to nab it again and jumped on it. In fact, that wasn’t the only shake up for “Victorian Psycho,” as we wrote in May that Maika Monroe had replaced Margaret Qualley in the film, who exited because of a scheduling conflict.
Production on “Victorian Psycho” kicked off this week in Ireland, and Bleecker is planning a theatrical release in 2026.
Set in Victorian England, “Victorian Psycho” sees an eccentric governess arrive at a remote gothic manor, where strange happenings stir suspicion that she’s not what she seems. The film also stars Jason Isaacs and Thomasin McKenzie, and it’s based on the popular novel released this February by author Virginia Feito. Feito also adapted her own book for the screen.
Monroe between “It Follows,” the upcoming “They Follow,” and “Longlegs” has become a mainstay of the elevated horror genre, and this film even reunites her with “Longlegs” producer Dan Kagan, who is producing under his Traffic banner. Sebastien Raybaud is also producing for Anton, as is Wigon, in association with Anonymous Content.
Executive producers include Anonymous Content’s Nick Shumaker and Bard Dorros, Feito, and Bleecker Street’s Kent Sanderson and Miranda King. The deal was negotiated by King and UTA Independent Film Group, CAA Media Finance, and Anton on behalf of the filmmakers. Anton is fully financing the film and is representing international rights.
“We are proud to partner with this incredible creative team on Victorian Psycho. Zach’s vision is thrilling, and we know every frame will be shocking, unique, and for lack of a better word, cutting” said Kent Sanderson, CEO at Bleecker Street. “Backing this film continues Bleecker’s mandate of supporting exciting voices and bringing entertaining, impactful films from across all genres to theaters.”
Bleecker Street has an exciting year still ahead, with David Mackenzie’s “Relay” starring Riz Ahmed opening in theaters tomorrow, August 22, followed by “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues” on September 12. Other upcoming releases include “Rebuilding” with Josh O’Connor, spoof comedy “Fackham Hall,” and the horror film “Bone Lake.”
